Cabinet Applauds Narendra Modi as He Becomes India’s Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister in Consecutive Terms
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in uninterrupted terms, completing 4,399 consecutive days in office and surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru’s record. The Union Cabinet passed a resolution in his honour as world leaders congratulated him on the historic democratic milestone.
According to government figures, Modi completed 4,399 consecutive days as Prime Minister on Wednesday, overtaking Nehru’s elected tenure of 4,398 days. The development places Modi at the top of the list of elected Prime Ministers who have served continuously without interruption since assuming office through the democratic electoral process.
Nehru, who first assumed office following the 1952 general elections, remained Prime Minister until his death on May 27, 1964. His tenure as head of the interim government between 1947 and 1952 is not included in the elected tenure comparison, as India had not yet conducted general elections during that period.
Modi first took office on May 26, 2014, after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a majority in the Lok Sabha elections. He began his second term on May 30, 2019, and was sworn in for a third consecutive term on June 9, 2024, extending his uninterrupted tenure in the country’s highest executive office.
Although former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served for more than 14 years in total, her time in office was divided into separate terms, making Modi the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in consecutive and uninterrupted service.
The achievement prompted congratulatory messages from several international leaders, who highlighted Modi’s leadership and contributions to India’s development and global standing.
Former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison praised Modi’s leadership, stating that he had transformed India’s economy and strengthened the nation’s position on the world stage. Morrison described Modi as a statesman whose tenure had significantly enhanced India’s global influence.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the milestone reflected years of dedicated public service and leadership, adding that Modi had played a key role in advancing India’s development, prosperity, and international stature.
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the achievement demonstrated the trust and confidence repeatedly placed in Modi by Indian voters across three consecutive electoral mandates. Referring to Modi as a personal friend and trusted ally, Tinubu commended his commitment to national development and global leadership.
Former Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih described the occasion as a historic milestone, stating that it reflected the enduring trust of the Indian people. He also highlighted the economic, social, and political progress achieved by India during Modi’s tenure as evidence of his leadership.
Kenyan President William Ruto also extended congratulations, noting that the record underscored the confidence reposed in Modi’s leadership by voters in the world’s largest democracy across three successive mandates.
The Cabinet resolution and the wave of international congratulations underscore the significance of the milestone, which marks a new chapter in India’s democratic history and highlights Narendra Modi’s unprecedented record as the country’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in uninterrupted office.
